About Boyle

 

Lough Key SUP is based in the scenic town of Boyle, home to the famous Boyle Arts Festival, one of the biggest and best in the country. Every Summer the town is flooded with visitors for the art, the music, the scenery and the history.

A trip to Lough Key is not complete without a trip to Boyle town to eat in one of the many delicious restaurants and gastropubs or to soak up some history by visiting the famous Boyle Abbey and King House.

If you prefer TV and movies, Boyle has a long and impressive history on this front.

It is the home of famous actress Maureen O’Sullivan, (mother of Mia Farrow) and you can visit the plaque placed at her birthplace in Main Street.


The TV show Moone Boy, written by Boyle native and Hollywood movie star Chris O Dowd, was set and filmed in Boyle and you can follow the Moone Boy Trail, an interactive walking/cycling trail through the various locations that appeared in the series.  In recent years several movies have been shot in and around Boyle and Lough key including Dark Lies the Island with Tommy Tiernan and most recently The Cellar with Hollywood actress Eliza Cuthbert in 2020. Both movies centre around the very area you will be exploring by SUP – Lough Key!

For cycling enthusiasts, the Boyle to Lough Key cycle way is a must-do. This scenic route takes you from Boyle to Lough Key via the marina and canal, it’s 8km and hosts spectacular views along the way.
